In order to describe the extent of drug treatment with mentally retarded children in public schools and the involvement of teachers in the drug regimen, a study was designed to survey teachers of the trainable mentally handicapped by mail about psychotropic and anticonvulsant drug use with the children they were teaching. The study was divided into two different phases plus an interview study to validate teacher reports. Objectives of Phase One were to: (1) determine the number of children who received medication during the school year and the resons for which the drugs were prescribed; (2) characterize teacher experience with children receiving medication for learning, behavior, and convulsive disorders; (3) describe teacher training about drug therapy with children; and (4) identify problems teachers encountered with children receiving medication, their parents, and physicians. Phase Two objectives were to: (1) describe teacher involvement in each stage of the drug regimen; (2) determine how drugs are administered and stored at school; and (3) identify problems teachers encountered with specific children receiving drug treatment.
