Paying Attention to Ourselves: Modeling Anti-Bullying Behavior for Students
Lucas, Amy Magnafichi
English Journal, v101 n6 p13-15 Jul 2012
It seems as if at no other time in the distant past has there been so much media coverage of bullies and bullying behavior within the schools. Has it always been present in some form? More than likely. Should it be brought to national attention? Absolutely. No one, student or not, deserves to feel unsafe, threatened, or invisible, whether it be at school, home, or work. From the accounts of students either taking matters into their own hands or the accounts of students ending their lives due to continued harassment, a plethora of programs and interventions has been created to help schools not only combat bullying but also to help change students' attitudes about and interactions with their peers. These programs are vital to begin a dialogue among students. But the anti-bullying rhetoric will not be successful if the focus remains solely on students. If educators want to effect change where bullying is concerned, it is imperative that they pay attention to their own interactions with students and colleagues to model anti-bullying behavior for their students. Creating collegiality in the school/workplace could be an effective way to model non-bullying behavior for the students who share this space with teachers and administrators. Educators would be remiss in thinking students are not in tune with how their teachers treat each other.
