Habitats: Making Homes for Animals and Plants.
Hickman, Pamela M.
This book of activities is designed to supplement a child's outdoor experiences and to encourage children to take a closer look at nature by creating temporary mini-habitats at home or in school. An introduction explains to students the concept of habitat and the responsibilities of keeping a mini-habitat. The remainder of the book contains instructions for 10 activities that involve the replication of habitats in aquariums and other containers. Activities are entitled: (1) "Life in a Rotting Log"; (2) "Wonderful Worms"; (3) "Watching Wood Lice"; (4) "Slugs and Snails"; (5) "Ponder a Pond"; (6) "A Toad's Tale"; (7) "Amazing Ants"; (8) "A Forest under Glass"; (9) "Mounds of Moss"; and (10) "Turn a Pond into a Forest." Activities contain step-by-step construction methods and an observation section which encourages students to examine the highlighted organism's ecology within it's natural habitat. Each activity contains a section called "The Big Picture" which places the concepts learned within a larger environmental context. (LZ)
