Students' Perceptions of Parental Support during the College Years
Kolkhorst, Brittany B.; Yazedjian, Ani; Toews, Michelle L.
College Student Affairs Journal, v29 n1 p47-63 Fall 2010
The purpose of this study was to explore the quality of the parent-adult child attachment relationship by examining students' perceptions of how their parents support them and facilitate their independence while they are in college. A total of 58 third-year students participated in an online interview via synchronous chat technology. Our findings revealed that the vast majority of students reported positive relationships with their parents and felt their parents trusted them to make their own decisions. Even though they expressed confidence in their ability to make their own decisions, students also reported frequently turning to their parents for many different types of support while in college. Furthermore, most students reported their relationships with their parents had improved since they enrolled in college, thus highlighting the evolving nature of this relationship during their college tenure.
