International Reports on Literacy Research: Chile, Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia
Malloy, Jacquelynn A., Comp.; Botzakis, Stergios, Comp.
Reading Research Quarterly, v40 n2 p268-272 Apr 2005
This is a compilation of reports on international literacy research. The report includes 4 separate reports on Chile, Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia. In the first report, research correspondent Marta Infante reports on two studies that reflect the growing interest of Chilean professionals in studying reading-related factors such as phonemic awareness, phonological development, and narrative development. In the second report, Melina Porto focuses on research in the field of teacher education that was carried out by teacher-researcher Silvana Barboni at the National University of La Plata in Argentina. Porto suggests that this study may be of interest to those in other areas of the world where complex social and educational environments have contributed to replacing traditional knowledge-centered curricula with more person-centered approaches to teacher education. Barboni's research is based on the idea that it is essential to educate student teachers to become proficient problem solvers by inviting them to consider the theoretical background of case studies of classroom students in typical Argentinian classrooms. In the third report, Claudia Cardoso-Martins details the findings of a report on literacy acquisition that was presented to the Brazilian House of Representatives on September 15, 2003. In response to high rates of reading difficulties in the Brazilian public schools, the Committee on Education and Culture of the Brazilian Parliament commissioned a group of scientists to write a report on the state of reading acquisition rates and reading instructional practices. The group was also asked to present proposals for political actions, the goal of which is to guarantee that every Brazilian child realizes adequate levels of reading achievement in the early school years. In the forth, and final, report, Amparo Clavijo-Olarte reports on literacy research projects that are being developed by professors and graduate students from public universities in Bogot?, Coloma.
