From Back Seat to Driver: Motivational Perspectives of What One Can Achieve Despite a Disability
Exceptional Parent, v40 n11 p22-23 Nov 2010
This article presents the story of Wesley Brooks, a freshman at Middlesex County College and someone who will not let his disability impede him from what he sets out to achieve in life. Brooks was born 24 weeks early and weighed just under one pound. This resulted in him having cerebral palsy, which impacts his motor movement. He also had to undergo Cryo surgery to save his sight, resulting in limited peripheral vision. Despite these limitations though, he has participated in numerous activities. Currently, Brooks has started an advocacy group for young adult students with the Alliance for the Disabled in Action, which is an organization for adults with special needs. He also educates future special needs students about the college transition process and recently spoke to graduate school students looking to teach special needs students in striving to make a difference.
