Teach "The Little Prince" to senior English students? Senior Advanced Placement English students? What could these people who had analyzed "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man," wrestled with "The Sound and the Fury," dissected "Heart of Darkness," and deconstructed "East of Eden" possibly find of value in a "children's book"? The tendency to categorize literary texts and then think of them only within the little boxes in which educators have placed them, boxes with labels such as children's literature, young adult literature, canonical or classical literature, even British literature or American literature, serves to draw artificial barriers between the vast landscape of literary texts. These labels restrict educators' ability to offer students opportunities to encounter texts that may seem to fall "outside" the accepted curriculum, and as a result, they may miss the chance to introduce or reintroduce their students to the precise texts they need at the exact moments that they need them.
