Cesar Chavez--Kindergarten Model Curriculum and Resources.
California State Dept. of Education, Sacramento.
In this California state curriculum model for kindergarten, "Learning and Working Now and Long Ago," students study the life, work, and philosophy of Cesar Chavez. The students learn that being a good citizen involves acting in certain ways. They have the opportunity to learn about the work people do to grow food, to harvest the crops, and to transport the food to locations where it can be sold. Kindergarten students learn about Cesar Chavez, the man for whom California named a state holiday. The curriculum presents a history/social science framework; provides an overview and context of Cesar Chavez; addresses history/social science state standards; notes materials needed; sets a context; poses a focus question; cites expected learning outcomes; discusses assessment; lists key concepts; suggests an essential vocabulary, primary sources, and visuals; and provides a detailed step-by-step procedure for implementing each of the five lessons. The lessons are: (1) "Cesar E. Chavez: An American Hero"; (2) "Cesar E. Chavez and His Family"; (3) "Cesar E. Chavez and the Community"; (4) "Cesar E. Chavez Making Change"; and (5) "The Memory of Cesar E. Chavez." A biography and photographs of Cesar Chavez are included. (BT)
