An ABC Literacy Journey: Anchoring in Texts, Bridging Language, and Creating Stories
Evers, Amy J.; Lang, Lisa F.; Smith, Sharon V.
Reading Teacher, v62 n6 p461-470 Mar 2009
The authors describe how alphabet books teach so much more than just the ABCs. They provide excellent resources, allowing teachers to link and integrate the reciprocal processes of reading and writing. Encapsulated within the writing workshop framework, the authors use multigenre and multicultural alphabet books as anchor texts for a literacy journey across all content areas. Leading diverse K-8 students to craft their own ABC stories, the authors share authentic experiences from elementary and middle school classroom settings. Literacy skills and strategies come alive for students as they embrace the creative potential and visual delights of technology. Writing opportunities bridge the classroom and home environments by inviting parent participation. (Contains 2 tables and 2 figures.)
