This student and teacher resource discusses the geography, history, and contemporary changes and achievements of Brazil. It is intended to complement textbooks and other teaching materials by serving as a resource for teachers, administrators, and students. The document is presented in three parts. Part I focuses on the geography of Brazil, covering political divisions, topographical features, major climate zones, demographic characteristics, and a discussion of the regional organization of the country. Part II examines the history of Brazil, with sections presenting Brazil as a Portuguese colony (1500-1815), as a United Kingdom with Portugal and Algarves (1815-1822), as an empire (1822-1889), and as a republic (1889 to the present). Part III emphasizes Brazil as a rapidly developing nation, discussing recent economic changes, political and administrative organization, social achievements, art, education, literature, mass media, religion, and sports. Appendices list holidays and festivals, Brazilian consulates and embassies as sources of information, selected fiction and nonfiction about the country, and audiovisual aids.
