Experiential Training in Substance Abuse Counseling: Curricular Design and Instructional Practices
Osborn, Cynthia J.; Lewis, Todd F.
Journal of Teaching in the Addictions, v3 n2 p41-56 2004
This manuscript describes two experiential course assignments consistently utilized in a graduate-level substance abuse counseling course: use of an abstinence contract, and Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meeting attendance. Methods used for introducing, incorporating, and processing these experiences are discussed and student reactions to and evaluations of the assignments are included. Recommendations for expanding and enhancing experiential training efforts and evaluation in substance abuse training are provided.
