Turning Ideas into Practice
Adams, Caralee
Principal, v91 suppl p5-8 Sep-Oct 2011
This article features five schools (John P. Oldham Elementary, Norwood, Massachusetts; R. J. Richey Elementary, Burnet, Texas; Pittsburgh Carmalt Science and Technology Academy, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; John D. Shaw Elementary, Wasilla, Alaska; and Springville K-8, Portland Oregon) that offer five promising practices. From fourth graders learning science by building their own Rube Goldberg machines, to immigrant students in Alaska creating bonds through a shared art project, the amazing stories of these five schools will push one to ask what one can do at one's school to enhance learning through the arts. Each school is an ordinary public school that was awarded a 2010-2011 Champion Creatively Alive Children grant from Crayola. They did not have special abilities or extraordinary student populations that made the projects they embarked on possible. Instead, what they had were innovative ideas that became promising practices.
