An Analysis of Attitudes and Coping Strategies of High School Youth: Response to Air Pollution.
Swan, James Albert
The purpose of this research study was to develop and test new instruments for assessing attitudes and coping responses to air pollution, and to gain insight into the factors influencing these attitudes and coping responses. Concern for air pollution was measured by two instruments a forced choice questionnaire which paired air pollution control with 12 other problem-solving programs for cities, and asked the subjects (173 senior high school boys) to choose the more important program for each pair; and, two stories describing a specific air pollution problem asking the subject how much time he would be willing to spend working on solving the problem. Scores indicated air pollution was viewed as a relatively serious problem. The relationship between concern for air pollution and visual awareness of air pollution was studied with a photographic technique, as well as the relationship between concern for air pollution and technical knowledge of air pollution. In addition, 35 subjects were given individual interviews involving them in role-playing utilizing a gaming simulation. Exploratory behavior, internal-external control of reinforcement, and political interest in local community problems were studied. (BL)
