Urban Ecology for Secondary Schools, Unit I - Technology and Environmental Pollution, Parts 1 and 2.
New York City Board of Education, Brooklyn, NY. Bureau of Curriculum Development.
Materials for a course on Urban Ecology are developed in these two documents which represent the first unit - Technology and Environmental Pollution. The entire course consists of seven units dealing with the many aspects of our way of life that produce an effect on, and in turn affected by, the quality of our physical environment. Unit I treats human activities that have contributed to environmental degradation. It stresses an understanding of these activities, their management, and schemes for their amelioration. Five topics are explored: (1) Power, Production and Use, (2) Pollution by the Industrial Process, (3) Machine-noise Pollution, (4) Pollution by Agricultural Technology, and (5) Pollution by Weapons Technology. Each learning sequence starts with a basic subject-matter aim, followed by a challenge and a problem. Concepts and understandings are supported by corresponding student-learning activities. Essentials of typical lesson plans are omitted to allow for logical, natural sequences of spiraling scientific logic leading to culminative resolutions. (BL)
