Enhancing Intergenerational Contact.
Ralston, Penny A.; And Others
This document is a curriculum module designed to assist secondary school home economic teachers in teaching students about aging. The three major purposes of this module are to provide data-based information on aging related to needs of students to enhance intergenerational contact; to facilitate the expansion of intergenerational contacts by providing experiential activities with older people; and to provide a multi-functional curriculum for any home economics course at any secondary grade level. The introductory sections of the module describe definitions, the organization of the module, application of basic skills, evaluation strategies, and ways to develop intergenerational contacts for students. The module contains four units: (1) perceptions of older people and the aging process; (2) biological/physiological aspects of aging; (3) demographic trends of aging; and (4) intergenerational communication. For each unit, there is a list of major objectives and subobjectives. Units are organized in double pages of four columns that include subobjectives, generalizations, learning activities, and resources. Individual learning activities are number-coded to link the activity to the corresponding generalization. A variety of learning activities and resources are suggested so that teachers may select those most applicable. The appendices, one for each unit, contain factsheets, activity sheets, graphs, case studies, and other materials to aid in teaching the curriculum. (NB)
