Voices of Disability in Nursing
Perkins, Liz
Exceptional Parent, v39 n12 p70-72 Dec 2009
In this article, the author shares her story of being a nurse with a disability who serves people with disabilities and older adults. She recounts her experience of what it is like to be stigmatized, marginalized, and to have lowered expectations because of her difference. The author had no right arm save about six inches from the shoulder down. As she had always done very well at school, when she hit the job market she was totally unprepared for the limited opportunities that she had. It was then that the stigma of having a disability really struck her for the first time. She applied for a Registered General Nurse (RGN) training program in a local School of Nursing where she experienced to be demoralized. However, when she went to the School of Nursing, at Lea Castle Hospital in Kidderminster, England, she was employed as a nursing assistant for two weeks on one of their most nurse-intensive units--Maple. For over 20 years now since the author first stepped into the School of Nursing at Lea Castle, her career has alternated between nursing the general aging population and persons with IDD. Now she is a doctoral candidate working on her dissertation for a PhD in Aging Studies.
