In the past several years, social services agencies that work with marginalized youth have reported increased interest in using spiritual activities as one tool in a more standard array of therapeutic interventions. Where it has occurred, the use of spirituality in such settings tends to reflect the agencies' belief that spiritual concepts have a unique role to play in addressing issues of key importance to their clients: belonging, community, forgiveness, meaning, purpose, and acknowledgment of a universal moral or ethical code. A 2002 study asked social service providers about the number and kinds of spiritually oriented activities they used in their work with adolescents. This article provides an overview of the findings of the study. (Contains 5 notes.)
