This curriculum guide is designed to promote excellence in the lives of students while empowering them to learn, appreciate, and practice the values inherent in the Olympic Movement and to recognize the learning opportunity of the 1996 Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games. The program seeks to integrate academic content from across the disciplines with critical thinking, discussion, and creative expression. Each chapter begins with an overview and objectives followed by a series of related activities. Volume 1 has five chapters with learning activities; those chapters include: (1) "Where the Spirit Began: The Ancient Games"; (2) "Reviving the Spirit: The Modern Games"; (3) "The Philosophy of the Spirit: Olympism"; (4) "The Spirit in Symbols and Ceremonies"; and (5) "The Spirit Continues: Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG)." The materials were designed to be integrated into the existing programs in K-8 of elementary and middle schools throughout Georgia. The variety of activities is to promote learning in all areas of study and is appropriate for students of various ages. An Appendix contains a glossary of sports, national governing bodies, a bibliography, and resources. (EH)
