The purposes of the United Automobile Workers labor studies program are to: (1) provide a broader understanding and perspective of economic, social, and political problems of our society and the role which unions and workers should play in it; (2) provide educational opportunities for individual growth and advancement; and (3) equip members of labor organizations with technical skills needed to exercise their union and civic responsibilities, especially those arising in urban areas. Options as to the various degree and certificate programs, reflecting different levels of achievement, include a certificate in labor studies, an associate degree (terminal), an associate of arts degree, and transfer of credits leading to baccalaureate and subsequent degrees. This document provides detailed course outlines, reference and resource materials, and bibliographies for the following course topics: introduction to organized labor in America; heritage and achievements of the labor movement; structure and administration of unions; collective bargaining negotiation, administration, and arbitration; labor law; time study; contemporary urban issues and problems; social movements; economics for labor; and creative uses of leisure time. An overview of the cooperative effort between the UAW and educational institutions and a list of nationwide programs are included. A list of suggested readings and textbooks are appended. (MB)
