Food: Images of America. Social Studies Unit, Elementary Grades 2-6.
Franklin, Edward; And Others
Designed to accompany an audiovisual filmstrip series devoted to presenting a visual history of life in America, this guide contains an elementary school (grades 2-6) unit on American food over the last century. Using authentic visuals including paintings, advertising, label art, documentary photography, and a movie still, the guide offers students a look at the changes in eating habits, in food technology, and in attitudes toward food in America over the last 100 years. Beginning with the motive for European exploration (spices), the materials trace the development of food production throughout the 1880's and on to the present. It also presents an introduction to material covered in the filmstrip, suggestions for classroom use (e.g., preliminary discussion, pre-teaching for visual appreciation, vocabulary pre-teaching, and history review), the script, reproductions of filmstrip frames, follow-up points for discussion, follow-up student projects, notes on the visuals, a glossary of unfamiliar terms, a list of 23 rcommended references, and historical notes.
