In chapter 1 of this volume of conference proceedings, economist Juanita M. Kreps traces the effects of demographic and social changes on the role of women in the economy. Chapter 2 presents management consultant Betty Lehan Harragan's "gamesmanship" thesis. In chapter 3, sociologist Rosabeth Moss Kanter analyzes the role of high technology in work. In chapter 4, the panelists' talks are presented, together with the discussion they elicited. Publisher Pam McAllister Johnson tells how she dealt with coworkers who felt that she was disadvantaged by being black and female; attorney Linda Bartlett focuses on the law; personnel executive Carol Kiryluk reflects on the advantages and disadvantages of being a single woman; and banker Eleanor Byrnes describes ways corporations are meeting the needs of dual-career employees. Personal solutions to the problems inherent in working and being a parent of small children are recounted by attorney Patricia M. Oesterle, personnel manager Deborah K. Smith, and marketing experts Gail Bryant Osterman and Margaret Coffey. Chapter 5 presents a brief review of the research about women and of advice books directed to women managers, and includes an annotated bibliography of 46 writings that appear to be the most sensitive and useful.
