This study attempts to replicate two early childhood education programs for parents of young children in order to study the process of social intervention in black lower-class families. The paper presents the infant testing results of a study which used a longitudinal multivariate, multimethod approach to the study of mothers and children who participated in a parent education program designed to enhance early childhood development. Mothers participated in either one of two programs: (1) Levenstein's Toy Demonstration Program; or (2) Mother's Discussion Group Program; or in a control group which received the prescribed toys but did not participate in home visits by a toy demonstrator or in group discussions. Infants were given various tests over the 19 month period. It was found that patterns of maternal childrearing attitudes do vary in predictable ways with program participation. The results presented are in support of the model which emphasizes the role of the parent as a teacher in the child's early life. Advances made by children were correspondingly paralleled by predictable patterns of maternal childrearing attitudes and observable teaching behaviors. (Author/RLV)
