Some teenagers with epilepsy only have to deal with seizures, which can be tough enough, but for other teens, seizures are not the only problem. Parents and caregivers often report changes in their teens' abilities to think clearly, learn in school, or remain focused in class. Mood and other behavioral problems may also be seen. It is critical that patients, family members, and caregivers understand the causes and consequences of these problems, and the roles of seizures and medicines on brain function. This article discusses the common mood and behavior problems in teens with epilepsy, explore brain-behavior relationships, and offer strategies to recognize and treat these problems early together with health care providers.
