The Effects of Divorce on Adolescents: Potential Maladjustment and Therapeutic Implications.
Hasz, Montfort O.
This document presents a literature review concerning the relationship between family divorce and subsequent adolescent psychological maladjustment. This topic is specifically considered in terms of the relationship between parental divorce and adolescent's gender and age at time of divorce. Additionally, empirical studies are reviewed in terms of factors that contribute to and mitigate against pathology. Studies are also considered to determine potential areas for therapeutic intervention. A number of different factors that affect the specific expression of maladjustment are discussed, including the gender of the adolescent, which has been shown to affect the forms of acting out behavior. Other findings are presented which suggest that both boys and girls who experience parental divorce are at risk for academic difficulties, low self-esteem, and general psychological maladjustment; the relationship between the adolescent's age at time of divorce and subsequent pathology was not clear. Conclusions from the analysis are listed, including: (1) adolescents from divorced homes are at increased risk of pathology; (2) specific manifestations of pathology are dependent on a number of factors; (3) effects of a divorce during adolescence extends beyond that period; and (4) from a clinical perspective, adolescents from divorced homes must be evaluated on an individual basis to determine the specific effect that divorce has had on their life.
