The Associate Degree Nursing Program at Rio Hondo College: A Research Report.
Michaels, Joseph
During 1975-76, an evaluation of the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program at Rio Hondo College was undertaken which involved: (1) surveying all nursing graduates in the classes of 1973, 1974, and 1975, and all fourth semester students currently enrolled in the program; (2) surveying or interviewing all instructional staff for the ADN program; (3) surveying and interviewing personnel at hospitals which employ Rio Hondo graduates; (4) examining State Board Test Pool Examination results for Rio Hondo students between 1970 and 1973. Graduates were found to be gainfully employed, and job satisfaction was high. Graduates stated that the instructional program was helpful at a moderate or higher level, and that clinical experiences and instructors were helpful to high or very high degrees. The staff reported that Rio Hondo graduates demonstrate the technical aspects of nursing skills at moderate or higher levels. Hospital personnel generally regarded the professional preparation of Rio Hondo nursing graduates as adequate or better. The performances of the graduates on the State Boards indicated that the graduates had been well prepared. They were above the California or national norms in 27 categories, and below the norms in only 13. Complete survey results are tabulated and graphed, the questionnaires are appended, and recommendations are made. (NHM)
