Spirituality and the Treatment of Substance Abuse.
Prezioso, Frederick Alan
This document attempts to give some shape and definition to the term spirituality as it relates to the addiction and recovery of chemically dependent persons and co-dependents. Positive and negative spirituality are discussed and addiction and "hitting bottom" are described. A variety of spiritual issues that are a part of the recovery process are enumerated: (1) detachment, forgiveness, and serenity; (2) a higher power initiates and empowers recovery; (3) the dark side of the self; (4) the process of conversion; (5) the spiritual guide; and (6) recovery as a journey homeward. Finally, a comprehensive approach for emphasizing spirituality within an inpatient treatment setting of 21-28 days is suggested. The 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous are appended. Notes, works cited, and an eight-page bibliography are included. (NB)
