Teachers strive to engage students in rich and varied experiences involving exploration. These experiences should be accessible to all types of learners (e.g., visual, kinesthetic, mathematically inclined), offering multiple pathways for engagement at different levels of sophistication and accommodating both conceptual and computational approaches. This article describes a classroom bungee jump experience that offers this flexibility while involving students in physics content. The literature on the physics of bungee jumping goes back about two decades, when the sport first became popular in the United States. Some articles describe major projects such as launching mannequins from 30 m towers (Worden, Murphy, and Stevens 1994), and others provide advanced, calculus-based analyses (Menz 1993). A classroom bungee jump activity helps students understand physics concepts. The author suggests introducing the activity with a short YouTube video of bungee jumping. (Contains 5 figures.)
