Action Research in Adult Education: Academic-Practitioner Partnership in Washington, DC
Shifferraw, Maigenet; Burton, Janet
Adult Basic Education and Literacy Journal, v2 n2 p109-112 Sum 2008
Excited about the possibilities of action research, these authors decided to develop a project that would test the effectiveness of action research as a professional development model for adult basic education teachers in the District of Columbia. The objectives of this action research were to: (1) Provide opportunities for teachers to be engaged in action research; (2) Identify promising practices to enhance learners' outcomes in reading, language acquisition, mathematics, and the use of technology; (3) Provide research-based information to the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) Graduate Certificate Program in Adult Education to connect practitioner research to teacher education; and (4) Examine and evaluate the professional gains teachers have made from conducting action research. Outcomes of this project reveal that teachers gained professionally from their experiences. They have been encouraged to reflect on their practices and to take actions to improve teaching and learning in their classrooms. The authors conclude with recommendations to aid communities that would like to create their own action research projects.
