Science for Handicapped Children.
Jones, Alan V.
This book consists of science activities for 11- to 16-year-old children who have physical disabilities. Part 1 presents information for teachers, parents, curriculum planners, and others who are interested in incorporating some science into the curriculum of the handicapped child. It outlines reasons for doing science, gives a suggested concept list and sequence diagrams for syllabi, and offers advice for parents working with a child at home. Part 2 consists of science activities and experiments in these categories: (1) chemicals around the home (color chemistry, acids and bases); (2) electricity; (3) ice and water; (4) forms; (5) candles, light, and hot air; (6) strength of materials; and (7) a collection of several short activities on various topics. All activities/experiments use easily available materials and can be assembled for students when and where they want them (at home, school, or in a hospital bed). Included in appendices are: notes on materials which can, with little or no modification, be incorporated into the school or home curriculum; information on science programs for handicapped students; descriptions of basic categories of some handicaps; a list of some scientific equipment suppliers; and information on various British syllabi and schemes for possible use with handicapped students.
