Some secondary students use alcohol and other drugs, and because so few receive specialized treatment, school social workers are in the optimal position for delivering brief interventions targeting substance use. Common misunderstandings about the nature of substance use problems and substance use disorder treatment will be discussed, and school social workers will be introduced to an empirically supported model for reducing alcohol and other drug use called Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT). Opportunities for training and implementation support in SBIRT will be described. Widespread implementation of SBIRT in secondary schools could have a large public health impact related to substance use reduction, a major cause of accidents and other negative consequences among secondary school students.
