The state of Indiana took a unique approach to developing a statewide plan to improve perinatal health outcomes by engaging parents in a series of focus groups, called Community Conversations in Perinatal Care (CCPC), to hear directly from consumers about their health care experiences and needs. Recognizing that disparities exist among different racial and ethnic groups, state leaders sought to address the cultural context of perinatal care by conducting CCPC groups in six counties with diverse populations. Three different models for the focus groups allowed local leaders to develop the most effective outreach in their own communities. The CCPC groups identified five main themes for state leaders to address in their efforts to improve perinatal services to women and children in Indiana: support from family and friends, caring clinical providers, access to health care, taking care of self, and competent clinical providers.
