Re-Thinking Disability in Public: The Making of the "UTS AccessAbility" Website Project
Hayman, Elizabeth
Discourse: Studies in the Cultural Politics of Education, v31 n4 p453-467 Oct 2010
Moves are afoot at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) to acknowledge disability within the overall experience of student life. Scheduled to launch in time for UTS Orientation 2010, "UTS AccessAbility" is a student-generated web presence addressing the significant additional layer that experiences of disability add to study experiences. Over 1000 students across both UTS campuses have personal experiences of studying and disability, yet prior to "UTS AccessAbility" there had been a lack of direct engagement with disability within the University's online presence. Covering both practical and cultural dimensions, the site operates as a first-stop location for disability-relevant information intended to enhance the experience of those studying, and about to study, at UTS. Given this intention, the site needs to be able to reach and find relevance with a potentially highly diverse audience. Its underlying ethos is to reflect, encourage and generate a multiplicity of ways of relating to the all-too-often unpacked phenomenon of student life as it plays out in relation to disability. This article will outline how the "UTS AccessAbility" website has evolved, some of the issues that have emerged during its creation and go on to speculate about how the project might be extended in the future.
