Instructor Manual, 1984-1985. Delta College Parent Awareness. Developmental Disabilities/Parent Awareness Program.
Delta Coll., University Center, MI. Allied Health-Community Affairs.
Designed for instructors in the Delta College Parent Awareness Program, this manual provides information on the program, its students, and appropriate instructional techniques. Introductory material describes the Parent Awareness Program designed for parents and family members of persons with mental retardation, cerebal palsy, epilepsy, autism, and learning disabilities. Next, an overview of the program is presented, covering its history and philosophy, the need for programs for parents of developmentally disabled children, the job responsibilities of field instructors, and the curriculum manuals prepared for the program. Following a description of procedures used to develop community support and recruit parents, a discussion is presented of instructional considerations related to parental stages of acceptance, adult learning theory, and the establishment of a participative environment. The next section suggests appropriate instructional techniques, discussing methods of presentation; the use of ice breakers, warm-ups, and games; how to obtain feedback and promote interaction through communication techniques; and how to deal with problems in a group. The final sections present lists of instructional materials, recommended readings, and other resources, along with sample forms and instructor contracts. (LAL)
