Year-Round Schools. The Abt Associates Series in Social Policy Analysis.
Shepard, Morris A.; Baker, Keith
The purpose of this book is to provide information about year-round schools (YRS) to those thinking about YRS as an educational option for their communities. The book includes a concise history of YRS and case studies of communities that have ventured to change their school calendars. The authors discuss some of the issues that a change to YRS entails, including its impact on school finances and on student achievement. While the authors do not wish to be viewed as advocates of YRS, they do advise school districts to look at the extended school year as one potential answer to educational problems. Pointing out the need for further research on YRS, the authors recommend that a more active role be assumed by the federal education research agencies. Information on the number, kind, and distribution by state of year-round schools is included. (Author/DS)
