The Controversy between Abstinence-Only and Abstinence- Plus Approaches to Sexuality Education.
Fisher, Jamie L.
Health Education Monograph Series: Student Monograph, v19 n2 p22-26 2002
Asserts that the debate over abstinence-only versus abstinence-plus sexuality education has shifted from what best serves students to what best suits adults' beliefs. Though research suggests comprehensive approaches to sexuality education are the most effective in reducing risk, government funding supports abstinence-only programs, which have limited research support. The paper suggests that health educators promote the evaluation of various programs, then provide effective, research- based programs. (SM)
