Keeping Fit with Asta O'Donnell. An Exercise Program for Problem Backs.
O'Donnell, Asta
An estimated 75 million people in the United States suffer from some type of back problem. Most are caused by muscle strain and improper posture. This book describes an exercise program designed to relieve muscle strain, improve and correct posture, and reduce stress and tension. The book is divided into four sections: "Warm Ups,""Basic Exercise Groups,""Exercise Routines," and "Progress Charts." Five basic exercise groups are described. Group A reduces stress and tension in neck and shoulders and increases the neck's range of motion. Group B increases circulation in arms and hands and gives greater flexibility and strength in hands, arms, and shoulders. Group C increases circulation, flexibility, and strength in back and legs. Group D promotes flexibility in legs and lower back and strength in abdominal muscles and the seat. Group E gives greater flexibility to the lumbar section of the spine and increases strength in abdominal muscles. Four exercise routines combine movements from the basic exercise groups, each one being more difficult than the one before. Progress logs are included to record the body's reaction to the program.
