O'Dell, Katie
This book describes how libraries can define their service goals to better serve and empower young women, including how to establish partnerships with organizations, offer developmentally appropriate programming, and provide timely reader's advisory services. Chapter 2, "Collection Development," covers the importance of the library collection, essential fiction for girls, periodicals, films and video series, collection development tools, and professional development resources for parents and professionals who work with teen girls. Chapter 3, "Programming," discusses budget, staff, space, public relations and marketing, making the case, picking the program, and evaluation. Chapter 4, "Girls and Technology," considers what libraries can offer and lists Web sites for girls. Chapter 5, "Volunteers," addresses why volunteerism is important, why teen girl volunteers are an asset, how to start a teen volunteer program, and energizing an established group. Chapter 6, "Collaboration," covers identifying possible collaborators, current services, possible collaborators, approaching possible collaborators, identifying and appreciating differences among collaborators, and evaluating the partnership process and outcome.
