The Graduate Research Assistantship: Perceptions of a Young Program
Gimbel, Phyllis; Cole, Ryan M.
Journal of Faculty Development, v23 n3 p20-22 Sep 2009
Bridgewater State College is a comprehensive master's granting institution that primarily prepares teachers, school counselors, psychologists, and school administrators. Within the past two years, the institution has developed a new Graduate Research Assistantship position available to students enrolled in a master's degree or Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) program. The Assistantship allows students seeking a master's degree to work with a faculty mentor in a research project. This pilot study provides a comparison of the Graduate Research Assistantship positions at six area institutions and Bridgewater State College, examines the perceptions and experiences of Graduate Research Assistants (GRAs) and faculty mentors at Bridgewater State College. It also highlights the importance of the Graduate Research Assistantship position for students who are enrolled in graduate study at the master's level leading to public school licensure or certification.
