After presenting a research review indicating that English as a second language (ESL) secondary school students need to improve their thinking skills, this paper reports on a study in which 136 analogies were developed for use as tools to teach these students to read at inferential and applied levels. The vocabulary source for the analogies was the Dale-Chall List of 3,000 Words (1948). Seventh-, eighth-, and ninth-grade ESL students (N=6) participated in four 50-minute sessions in which they studied two of eight analogy types (semantic comparisons, nonsemantic comparisons, portion analogies, class, sequence, characteristics, degree of intensity, and source). Relationship sentences were used to check the accuracy of the analogy solution. Pre- and post-tests consisting of 25 analogies each showed that the students improved in their ability to reason analogically. Analogies at an appropriate vocabulary level can be taught to ESL students, who can also be taught higher level thinking skills such as inference, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis through analogies.
