Supporting Learning of Variable Control in a Computer-Based Biology Environment: Effects of Prompting College Students To Reflect on Their Own Thinking.
Lin, Xiaodong; Lehman, James D.
Journal of Research in Science Teaching, v36 n7 p837-58 Sep 1999
Describes a study of college students who designed and conducted experiments involving control of variables after being assigned to one of four versions of a computer-based biology simulation learning environment. Finds that reason-justification prompts directed students' attention to understanding the employment of experimental design principles and strategies, which helped students transfer their learning to a novel problem.
