Writing figures prominently in accounts of foreign language learning that is specially concerned with promoting the development of learner autonomy. Writing things down plays a prominent role in the autonomous foreign language classroom. The learner texts presented and discussed in this paper invite reflection on three issues of general importance for foreign language teaching: (1) foreign language proficiency involves a great deal more than morphosyntactic accuracy; (2) the cultural component in foreign language learning can never be wholly detached from the cultural competence that all learners have developed in their first language environment; (3) learner texts are assembled in a patchwork fashion, which simultaneously raises issues of intertextuality and the limits of the toleration of plagiarism as a language learning technique.
