Children Hungering for Justice: Curriculum on Hunger and Children's Rights, Grades K-4.
Gray, Kaaren St. Armour
This curriculum is designed to introduce students to the issues of world hunger and children's rights. The curriculum includes more than enough material for two hour-long lessons. Each lesson can stand on its own; however, the interrelated nature of the topics lends itself to presenting both parts of the packet. If time is limited, suggestions are provided in each lesson regarding which subsections might be combined to create shorter lessons. Cross-references are made from one unit to the other. The lessons include: (1) "Children and Hunger"; (2) "Children and Justice"; (3) "Students CAN Make a Difference"; and (4) "Additional Resources." The purpose of the lessons is to promote awareness and social action for positive change. The teacher's role in encouraging productive responses will help empower children to action. It is this action, not guilt, that the curriculum strives to foster. (EH)
