In 1942, Howard Wilson, a professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the editor of the Harvard Educational Review, called for the "easternization of America," in reaction to what he called the "glib" talk for years about the "westernization of Asia." Funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, Wilson's Committee, Committee on Asiatic Studies of the American Council on Education, whose members included such Asia specialists as Dorothy Borg of the Institute of Pacific Relations and John King Fairbank of Harvard, devised model syllabi for colleges and high schools, sponsored training sessions for teachers and curriculum specialists, and monitored the progress of textbooks in adopting these ideas. This article examines the earlier efforts of Wilson's Committee to promote the teaching of Asian history and culture in American schools. (Contains 45 notes.)
