Reflections on Differentiation: An Interview with Joyce VanTassel-Baska
Understanding Our Gifted, v19 n2 p21-23 Win 2007
Joyce VanTassel-Baska is the Executive Director of the Center for Gifted Education and the Jody and Layton Smith Professor of Education at the College of William & Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia. For the past 20 years, the Integrated Curriculum Model, based on research of what works with gifted learners, has been the foundation of curriculum development spearheaded by VanTassel-Baska, including eight Javits Projects. That model has built-in differentiation considerations that have guided design and development of many units of study, both through work at the College of William & Mary as well as in a number of school districts in the United States and worldwide. This article is a synthesis of a recent interview with VanTassel-Baska. In her interview, VanTassel-Baska talked about the importance of differentiation in curriculum and the principles of differentiation that should always be designed into a curriculum unit for gifted learners.
