This study investigated attitudes of black and white male students toward guidance and their preference for a counselor on the basis of race and sex. A random sample of 97 boys from two schools participated in the study. All boys in the sample were given the Attitudes Toward a Guidance Program questionnaire and all answered a Counselor Preference questionnaire. Five hypotheses were developed and the median test was performed and Chi-square subsequently used to test for null hypotheses of no difference in proportion between the two groups. The results obtained from the study revealed that: (1) there were no significant differences on scores on the Attitudes Toward a Guidance Program scale between black and white students at either school or between the two schools; (2) Chi-square values yielded a significant difference in the proportion of blacks preferring a black as compared to a white counselor. Blacks preferred a black counselor; whites preferred a white counselor; (3) there was no significant difference in the proportion of blacks and whites choosing male as compared to a female counselor. Both groups preferred males; and (4) there was no significant difference between black and whites in those indicating no racial preference. Approximately fifty percent of each group failed to indicate a racial preference. (Author)
