High School Geography Project. Legacy for the Seventies. An Analysis of the High School Geography Project in Relation to New Developments in Geographic Education Worldwide.
Gunn, Angus M., Ed.
Nine articles by geographers and educators analyze the High School Geography Project (HSGP). A project overview by Angus Gunn presents essential ideas and content of six units and several preliminary reactions. The question of "HSGP exportability" to France and Germany is examined in articles by Maurice Saint-Yves and Robert Geipel suggesting the practicality of undertaking similar ventures in these and other countries. Gilbert F. White analyzes the international dimensions of the project, summarizing the principal activities of assessment and application, adaptation, and the world-mindedness approach of the project. Implications of curriculum decisions are discussed by Nicholas Helburn, emphasizing that the impingement of social, economic, and political values upon curriculum development requires that deliberate choices need to be made in the selection of subject matter and kinds of processes. Remarks on preparing classroom materials, based on project hindsight, are offered by Donald J. Patton. Functions of formative and summative evaluation are discussed by Dana G. Kurfman. The last two articles, by Angus M. Gunn, discuss the accepting/rejecting processes and provide two examples of classroom materials. A bibliography of articles about the project and of publications by the project is provided. (SJM)
