The Renewal of Competency-Based Education: A Review of the Literature
Burnette, Diane M.
Journal of Continuing Higher Education, v64 n2 p84-93 2016
Although competency-based education (CBE) has existed since the early 1970s adult-focused degree programs, interest in CBE has spiked in recent years due to the increased attention on higher education affordability and accountability. This article reviews the extant literature on CBE to address the following questions: (a) What are the definitions of CBE? (b) What are the characteristics of contemporary CBE programs? (c) What are the various CBE programmatic models? (d) What challenges are confronted by institutions seeking to implement CBE programs? (e) What are the key factors in planning CBE frameworks? The review of literature brings to light some of the issues facing adoption of CBE.
