Sustainability 101
Shi, David
Trusteeship, v16 n2 p20-25 Mar-Apr 2008
Sustainability is one of the leading issues of this time. Climate change is real, and widespread commitment and creativity are needed to combat its negative effects. Higher education is the seedbed of the sustainability movement. Much climate research and environmental science takes place on college and university campuses, which are, by their very nature, sustainable. In this article, the author features Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, which has recently made sustainability one of its institutional goals. At Furman University, environmental education is a way of life. Furman made 2006 the "Year of the Environment." To commemorate the occasion, the school partnered with "Southern Living" magazine to build an eco-friendly "Showcase Home," which eventually serves as the university's Center for Sustainability. Furman also has developed a multiyear plan to restore the natural beauty and water quality of the university's Furman Lake. The plan calls for an integrated approach involving student/faculty research and action, changes in institutional practices, incorporation of new techniques to nurture wetlands and improve water chemistry, and a healthy level of institutional financial support. Furman's commitment to sustainability is manifested in its construction of LEED-certified buildings. LEED--for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design--is a certification process by which the sustainability and environmental sensitivity of a building is evaluated.
