This report provides a summary record of the achievements realized and the problems encountered by the nine colleges of the Los Angeles Community College District during the 1985-86 school year. First, a district overview highlights several positive and negative trends, including: (1) enrollment continued to decline, which brought the District to its lowest level since 1969; (2) English and mathematics programs resisted the enrollment declines, especially developmental courses; (3) the Board of Trustees' decision to reduce regular faculty positions in low vitality/high cost programs was the most significant action of the year; (4) human and physical resources in all areas were depleted, but the results were most apparent in support services and in the physical environment of the colleges; (5) efforts to encourage academic excellence and prepare students for transfer to four-year colleges were expanded; and (6) the aggressive pursuit of special funding by both administration and faculty led to substantial awards, especially in vocational areas. Next, narrative reports are presented for Los Angeles City College, East Los Angeles College, Los Angeles Harbor College, Los Angeles Mission College, Los Angeles Pierce College, Los Angeles Southwest College, Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, Los Angeles Valley College, and West Los Angeles College. Each individual college report includes information on the college's mission, functions and goals; instructional programs; instructional support and student support services; community services; planning, research and development; community relations; and administrative services.
