The Role of Permanent Income and Demographics in Black/White Differences in Wealth
Altonji, Joseph G.; Doraszelski, Ulrich
Journal of Human Resources, v40 n1 p1 Win 2005
A large part of the racial disparity with wealth holdings with income and demographic variables can be explained by examining the wealth model of a sample of whites, but only a small fraction when we use a black wealth model. Research finds a higher self-employment rate and a stronger link between self-employment and wealth for whites than for blacks leading to the increasing wealth gap. Income and demographic differences as well as difference in savings behavior also lead to the disparities in wealth generation between blacks and whites.
